Administrative Divisions of Bhadrak District

An Administrative Overview of Bhadrak District

Bhadrak District, located in the Indian state of Odisha, is a region with a rich history and a well-defined administrative structure. Understanding its administrative divisions is key to appreciating its governance and demographic layout. The district is divided into several tiers of administration, from sub-divisions to blocks and gram panchayats, which collectively manage local affairs and development projects.

The administrative division of Bhadrak District is organized to ensure effective governance and a direct line of communication between the state government and the local populace.  The district is headed by a Collector and District Magistrate, who is responsible for revenue administration and law and order.

Administrative Sub-divisions

Bhadrak District is further divided into one revenue sub-division, which serves as an intermediary level of administration. This sub-division is headed by a Sub-Collector, who oversees the various Tahasils within their jurisdiction. The primary function of a sub-division is to assist the District Collector in land revenue administration and the maintenance of public records. The sole sub-division of the district is Bhadrak Sub-division.

Blocks

For developmental and administrative purposes, the sub-division is further divided into blocks. A block is the most crucial administrative unit at the grassroots level, focusing on rural development programs and schemes. Each block is headed by a Block Development Officer (BDO), who is responsible for implementing various government initiatives related to agriculture, health, education, and sanitation. The BDO works closely with the local Gram Panchayats to ensure that these programs reach the intended beneficiaries.

Bhadrak District has a total of seven administrative blocks:

  1. Bhadrak Block
  2. Basudevpur Block
  3. Bhandaripokhari Block
  4. Dhamnagar Block
  5. Chandbali Block
  6. Tihidi Block
  7. Bonth Block

These blocks serve as the operational hubs for a wide range of government and non-governmental activities. They are the primary contact points for citizens seeking to access government services or participate in local development.

Villages and Panchayats

The smallest administrative units in Bhadrak District are the villages. Villages are grouped together to form Gram Panchayats, which are self-governing bodies at the village level. A Gram Panchayat is led by a Sarpanch, who is elected by the villagers. The Gram Panchayat is responsible for a number of functions, including local sanitation, maintenance of public properties, and the resolution of minor disputes.

The list of villages within each block is extensive. However, to illustrate, here are some prominent villages from a few of the blocks:
