ЁЯзк Preparation of 0.1 M Ceric Ammonium Nitrate
The solution is prepared as follows:
- Dissolve┬аabout┬а54.82┬аgrams┬аof Ceric Ammonium Nitrate (AR Grade) in the first step.
- Heat┬а56┬аml┬аof concentrated┬аH2тАЛSO4тАЛ┬а(sulfuric acid) in┬а500┬аml┬аof water.
- Combine the dissolved Ceric Ammonium Nitrate with the heated sulfuric acid mixture.
- Cool┬аthe solution and┬аfilter┬аif it appears turbid.
- Dilute┬аthe clear solution with distilled water to a final volume of┬а1000┬аml.
- Allow the preparation to stand one day┬аbefore proceeding to standardization.
ЁЯФм Standardization of 0.1 M Ceric Ammonium Nitrate
The Ceric Ammonium Nitrate solution is standardized against Arsenic Trioxide (As2тАЛO3тАЛ), a primary standard.
Standardization Procedure
- Weigh┬аaccurately about┬а0.2┬аgm┬аof Arsenic Trioxide (As2тАЛO3тАЛ), which has been previously dried at┬а105тИШC┬аfor 1 hour.
- Transfer┬аthe weighed┬аAs2тАЛO3тАЛ┬аto a conical flask.
- Wash down┬аthe inner walls of the flask with┬а25┬аml┬аof a┬а8.0%┬аw/v┬аsolution of┬аSodium Hydroxide┬а(NaOH).
- Swirl┬аthe flask to dissolve the arsenic trioxide completely.
- Add┬а100┬аml┬аof water and mix.
- Add┬а30┬аml┬аof dilute┬аH2тАЛSO4тАЛ┬а(sulfuric acid).
- Add┬а0.15┬аml┬аof┬аOsmic┬аAcid┬аsolution and┬а0.1┬аml┬аof┬аFerroin Sulfate┬аsolution (indicator).
- Titrate┬аwith the prepared Ceric Ammonium Nitrate solution until the┬аpink color changes to a very pale blue┬а(the endpoint).
Calculation
The molarity of the Ceric Ammonium Nitrate solution can be calculated using the titration data and the weight of the primary standard, As2тАЛO3тАЛ.
The fundamental relationship is:
Volume of Ce(IV)├ЧMolarity of Ce(IV)├ЧFactor=Weight of As2тАЛO3тАЛ
Or, specifically:
Molarity (M)=Volume of Ce(IV) used in ml├Ч0.004946Weight of As2тАЛO3тАЛ in gramsтАЛ
Where 0.004946 grams is the weight of As2тАЛO3тАЛ equivalent to 1 ml of 0.1 M Ceric Ammonium Nitrate.
The reaction that occurs during the titration is a redox reaction where Ce(IV) oxidizes As(III) to As(V). The osmic acid acts as a catalyst, and the ferroin sulfate complex acts as the visual indicator for the endpoint.
