The Good:

To be honest, the plot of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is very much predictable. I have seen many similar Hindi movies in the past with a similar concept. From the very beginning and from the film’s title itself, you would know that, in the end, Sunny Sanskari (Varun Dhawan) and Tulsi Kumari (Janhvi Kapoor) will be happily ending up together. However, even if the story has predictability, the real fun lies in the film’s engaging and entertaining screenplay with Varun Dhawan’s comical punches and mischievous gestures every now and then, and building up a chaotic atmosphere where Sunny and Tulsi arrive at their exes’ wedding with their plan to ruin it.

Varun Dhawan holds the entire screenplay on his shoulders by keeping his funny dialogues, comical expressions, and at times, heart-wrenching emotions going on. It’s his charm and screen presence in the movie that made it even funnier. Had it been some other male lead, I don’t think the movie’s hilarity would have been the same. Varun is an extremely talented actor when it comes to comic roles. Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf also carried out their respective roles effectively.

Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari also makes us aware of how family expectations and societal pressures can ruin one’s love life, especially in a country like India, where class and caste play vital roles in fixing marriages. There are some harrowing emotional scenes in the second half where the realization of true love happens. At one point, Sunny even had the dilemma of choosing between Ananya and Tulsi, which was funny and emotional at the same time.

The cinematography is warm and elegant with a familial touch. One of the iconic dance tracks, “Bijuria” of singer Sonu Nigam, speaks of nostalgia of the 1990s Bollywood era.

The Bad:

The first half was gripping, but still, I believe the editing in the second half could have been crisper to omit some stretchy scenes. Moreover, I didn’t appreciate the “happy ending” of this movie where Sunny proposed and kissed Tulsi at a very odd place and moment, inside her school campus, where she was a teacher, which ultimately made her lose her job. Well, he could have made that proposal at some other place. Love is cool, but it shouldn’t be at the cost of someone’s livelihood.

The Verdict: A Lighthearted Comical Entertainer

I would call Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari a lighthearted comical tale of love and sacrifice. I call it “sacrifice” in the sense that Tulsi ultimately gave up her job for love.

But all’s well that ends well! In case you need to freshen up your mood after a busy day, then you can consider hitting the theaters to watch this mind-refreshing entertainer.
