Visiting London during Christmas, and wondering where to see the best Christmas decorations and lights in London? Then this guide is for you! London is one of the best city to visit during Christmas time, and it’s one of my most favorite time of the year in the city!

I’ve been to New York at Christmas, and while the decorations were beautiful, but it’s nothing as compared to London! The Christmas lights in London are beautiful, and the most impressive I’ve ever seen anywhere else in the world!

The streets are decorated with twinkling lights, festive decorations everywhere you see, and charming displays on shopfronts, doors, and buildings, with most amazing light displays and decorations throughout the city. I really love all the festive things to do in London, and wandering around the city to admire the festive displays!

So today follow along to find the best spots to see Christmas decorations in London as well as finding the best London Instagram spots during the Christmas season. I have also covered the London Christmas lights walking trail that covers the best places in Central London to see the London Christmas lights and decorations, on this three to four hours walking route.

London has some of the most amazing Christmas light decorations, and I am sharing few of my most favorites!

1. Regent Street – Best Christmas Lights in london

Regent street in London is known for its flagship shopping stores, luxury hotels, and architecture. You may have seen countless pictures of London at Christmas with angels displaying above the street, and that is Regent Street!

The tradition of Christmas lights in London began in Regent Street in 1954. And today, it’s one of the most famous streets to visit in London during Christmas. The street looks magical at night with more than 300,000 twinkling angels.

The decorations stretch from Langham Place to waterloo place but the best section is between Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus especially near Karl Lagerfeld. 

Looking at the popularity of the street, it gets very crowded during the Christmas. So just try to visit on a weekday evening instead of a weekend. Angels on Regent street are on repeat displays every year! You can get the photos from the central of the street with red buses in the background.

2. Oxford Street

Oxford Street is one of the first place in London to turn on Christmas lights, typically around 4th November. And that marks the starting of Christmas season in London. Every year the display consists of more than 300,000 stars forming a canopy over the longest shopping street in London. It’s one of the most magical Christmas displays in London.

For festive fun, visit the Selfridges Christmas window displays with different creative theme every year! Oxford Street Christmas lights turn on from 4 PM to 11 PM to save the energy! So I recommend going around at 10 PM to avoid crowds.

3. New Bond Street – Must see Christmas Decorations in London

Bond street is known for its high end designer stores, with all storefronts decked up for Christmas spirits. The highlights includes the Cartier store, which is adorned with stunning window displays. You must add it in your London Christmas Itinerary.

Chanel, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany store fronts are also beautiful and impressive along the street. Keep your camera charged, as you’ll click lots of photos of some of the best Christmas decorations in London.

While you’re here, make sure to get a table at Ralph’s Coffee to see the best views of Cartier display. The cafe opens at 10 AM and they start setting up tables 9:30 AM onwards. This store front is super popular and gets crowded very early, so arrive early in the morning to get the best photos!

4. Carnaby Street

Carnaby street is another famous street to see the Christmas decorations in London. Carnaby street lights follows a theme every year!

In past few years, they featured floating planet, but last year and this year the displays are same. It features geometric shaped light display with colors. It’s not that beautiful but surely worth to stop by it!

Just few steps away from Carnaby street, you can visit the Kingly Court. It has so many cafes, restaurants and even underground bars! Don’t forget to have Basque Cheesecake at La Maritxu.

5. Regent Street St James’s

When you’re near Piccadilly circus, walk towards waterloo place, where you’ll find an illuminated Christmas Tree in the center with festive displays all over the street!

Wander around St James market wishing tree, or Jermyn street for the crowd free Christmas spots in London. This area is often overlooked by many, but you’ll find so many lesser known Christmas decorations of London near to it.

6. Fortnum & Mason

Fortnum & Mason is London’s oldest department store and is very iconic to London. It has been a favourite of the Royal Family since Queen Victoria’s times. So, it’s a must-stop during the festive period. Every year they decorates their facade to look like a giant advent calendar with beautiful red lights and decorations.

Stroll around the store, see the Christmas tree and displays inside the store, or shop for the Christmas gifts. Their Christmas hampers are very famous. If you fancy a luxurious festive afternoon tea, book a table at their tea salon. I love their Chocolate Biscuits, must buy it from here.

7. Annabel’s – Best Christmas Displays in london

Annabel is private members only club, and puts a very impressive Christmas decorations every year! Out of all the best spots to see in Christmas decorations in London, Annabel’s is my most favorite and must visit!

Every year, they covers the entire facade of their building in a themed decorative display. Last year, they created a giant snow globe and it was really beautiful!

In past, they there was a gingerbread house, nutcracker display, Christmas tree, and a carousel ride etc. This is definitely most instagrammable photo spots in London during Christmas, and one of the highlights of London Christmas Lights walking route, where you can see the central London lights in this DIY walking guide.

8. Claridge’s

Claridge’s is an iconic luxurious hotels of London, and I really love seeing their Christmas display. Inside you can see their beautiful Christmas tree that follows different design every year!

9. Koyn Christmas Car

Koyn is a Japanese restaurant in Mayfair and outside of it, you will find the most adorable red car decorated with Christmas gifts, and a Christmas Tree on top.

It is one of the cutest Christmas photo spots in London! I have also heard good reviews about the food, make sure to try it!

10. The Connaught

Just few steps away from Koyn, you’ll find beautiful Connaught village. The streets and buildings get decked with beautiful lights. You’ll also find pretty interesting Christmas tree at the Connaught Hotel. The hotel is very famous for its Christmas decorations as well as its afternoon tea. But make sure to book it in advance.

When you’re here, don’t forget to visit nearby Hedonism wines Christmas displays! They come with beautiful lighting theme every year!

11. Covent Garden: Most spectacular Christmas decorations in London

Covent Garden is one of the most popular Christmas decorations in London. And you’ll see lots of thing happening here! It’s one of the most busy area in London during Christmas.

The central square houses a small Christmas market, full of charming decorations, mulled wine, and hot chocolates. There are so many shops and restaurants in the area, and they absolutely goes wild with the festivities!

You’ll see a large Christmas tree centered around the square with red and white twinkling lights and a cute Santa sleigh for the photos! This is hands down my most favorite Christmas displays in London.

Make sure you stop by Miracle at Henrietta Hotel at their Christmas themed bar for the festive cocktails! It’s very popular during the season, so make sure to book months in advance when they open reservations.

12. Neal’s Yard & Seven Dials

Just 10 minutes walk from Covent Garden, Neal’s yard is one of the most colorful places to visit in London during Christmas. You’ll find lots of cafes, stores, restaurants and bakeries in the area. I really love stopping by 26 grains for the good breakfast or grab some bakery items at St John’s Bakery.

Few steps from Neal’s yard, stop at the Seven Dials, a column bearing six sundials. At Christmas, it features canopy of light displays around central monument. This is probably my favorite light display in London.

Just wander in any directions, you’ll find best boutique stores, restaurants, and hidden squares! I also suggest visiting nearby Seven Dials Market!

13. Leadenhall Market

Leadenhall Market is a covered market in East London and was a filming location for Harry Potter! You’ll see a Christmas Tree in the center of the market and is a great Photo Spots to see Christmas decorations in London. Not just during Christmas, this market is worth the visit for its colorful architecture at any time of the year.

14. Ivy Chelsea Garden

The Ivy is one of the most famous restaurant in London with various locations throughout the city. But the Christmas displays at the Chelsea location is always seems spectacular! You’ll find something new every year and its most lovely Christmas decorations in London.

15. Harrod’s

Your London Christmas decorations list is incomplete without visiting Harrod’s. It’s most famous department store in London located on Brompton Road in Knightsbridge. During Christmas it gets decorated with golden Christmas lights, with beautiful light display show every few minutes!

This is London’s most famous pub, and known for its extravagant flower displays during the summer. They spend around £25K a year on flowers to cover the exterior of the pub. So aptly it’s known as London’s most colorful Pub.

But During Christmas, it is decorated with 90+ Christmas trees and 22,000 lights covering its exterior! Isn’t it magical? Honestly, this is one of the most fantastic Christmas decorations in London.

Don’t just visit the Pub from outside, step inside and admire the Churchill memorabilia as well as festive decorations. If you want to have lunch or dinner, they serves delicious Thai cuisines. Make sure to book a table in advance during festive season.

17. Christmas in Belgravia

One of the most picturesque area of London, Belgravia decks up so well with seasonal charm. It’s one of the most underrated place to see Christmas decorations in London. And if you don’t know Belgravia is London’s most wealthiest and prestigious neighborhood, attracting both artists and the affluent people.

The most festive displays you’ll find on Elizabeth Street and Motcomb Street. Just walk the street and you’ll come across the beautiful shopfronts showcasing the creative light displays that captures the spirit of the season. I love this street for quaint Christmas experience.

18. Peggy Porschen’s

One of the my favorite cupcake shop in London and most instagrammable spots to visit in London. They always has a seasonal displays throughout the year! But their Christmas display is always impressive to visit. The storefront looks absolutely beautiful at Christmas.

You can grab your breakfast or have afternoon tea here in the most festive setting, just as you imagine your Christmas to be! Their cupcakes and hot chocolates are worth to try!

19. Chelsea Christmas Lights

Another affluent neighborhood, Chelsea is must visit to see some of the best Christmas decorations in London. The area decks out with with twinkling lights, Christmas trees and festive installations.

Admire the dazzling light displays along the famous King’s Road, and Duke of York Square. You can see beautiful store fronts, Sloane square with dazzling light displays and festive activities throughout the area.

You’ll find their Belgravia location decorated well with a magical fairytale vibe. They changes theme every year but it’s becoming more and more beautiful every year.

21. Hay’s Galleria

Located near London Bridge station on the south bank of the river Thames, Hay’s Galleria is a bustling shopping area of London. If you’re visiting Tower Bridge Christmas market, you can walk along the river to Hay’s Galleria.

During Christmas, it transforms into magical wonderland featuring a huge Christmas tree and one of the best Christmas Markets in London, Christmas by the River. You can shop at the many Christmas Market stalls for jewelry, accessories, and more.

Grab some churros or tasty treats from the stalls, and then head to Riverside glasshouse terrace to get the some mulled wine and Pizza with the tower bridge views.

The Ritz Carlton is a most luxurious hotel of London, located right next to Green Park station. Each year they decorate their the entrance with a beautiful wreath lining the walkway and beautiful lovely Christmas tree at the entrance!

Every year during the holiday season, ever after garden is illuminated with 30,000 white roses to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. It creates the beautiful atmosphere as well as you can honor the memory of your loved ones by dedicating a rose in their memory.

The display remains same each year. This year they are shifting the location to Duke of York Square. It is a beautiful place to pause and remember an absent friends and family during this festive season. It’s free to visit, but donations are encouraged for a noble cause. It is open from 3 PM to 9 PM.

24. Notting Hill

The Christmas decorations in Notting Hill are really great every year! You can take a walk around Elgin Crescent,  Lansdowne Crescent or enjoy the festive atmosphere at Portobello road market. Just wander around the streets, and discover the beautifully decorated houses and light displays.

25. Battersea Power Station

From dazzling lights to giant Christmas decorations, Battersea Power station is another most underrated Christmas decorations in London. It’s not known by many tourists, and so you should add this place in your London Christmas itinerary.

You’ll find ‘Glide’ Ice rink, and a Christmas market consisting of hundreds of independent sellers offering a selection of handmade trinkets, ornaments to delicious sweet treats.

You can also stroll around the shopping mall containing 150+ brands, and dine at arcade food hall serving different international cuisines.

Liberty is one of the most famous places to visit in London at Christmas. This historical department store built in the Tudor Revival style was completed in 1924, making it one of the oldest store of London.

They don’t have a huge amount of lights on the outside, but as you step inside, you’ll see cute Christmas shop, and beautiful Christmas decorations hanging from the top!

If you want to see the Christmas decorations in London, there are so many amazing places to stay. London’s tube system is amazing and you can reach anywhere you want very quickly.

However, if you want to be in the middle of all actions, I recommend staying in Covent Garden, or Soho. This way you can see the most of the Christmas light displays and attractions without hopping on a tube! But as I shared, there are so many Christmas Photo spots throughout the London!

How to See the Christmas Lights In London?

On DIY Walking Tour

The best way to see the lights is by walking! This DIY self guided London Christmas Lights walking route with map will help you to see most of the stunning displays in London on your own! It takes 4-5 hours, and takes you to the most iconic streets and Christmas decorations.

By Public Bus

Another great way to see the Christmas lights is on an iconic double-decker bus. One of the best bus routes for this is the 139 towards waterloo.

Don’t hop on the bus near Selfridges, as it will be more crowded! Catch the bus from Stop BZ on Orchard Street outside Selfridges. It goes down Oxford Street, right onto Regent Street, and past Trafalgar Square, then the Strand. Get off at South Hampton street to head into Covent Garden.

Alternatively, you can skip Covent Garden, stay on the bus until Waterloo. From there make your way to Southbank’s Winter Market to finish your ride with a cup of mulled wine! Walk along the rover and enjoy the festive cheer to end your day!

The other best way to see the Christmas lights is by an organized tour. This helps you to see the Christmas lights without hassles and crowds! This is probably the best way to see them.
