As a rule, I’m generally not one for the New Year / New Me vibe. Reason being, it’s rare that the New Year period aligns cosmically with resolutions, goals or intention setting. The Aries Equinox and New Moon period is better for that. So much so, I have an entire workshop all about it!
However, January 2026 is different and I’m excited to use this very first blog post on my new website to explain why.
If you thought 2025 slipped by quickly, 2026 looks set to be even quicker! However, January provides a focused and grounded energy that can help you get your ducks lined up before the crazy starts.
CAPRICORN SEASON
January always aligns with the bulk of Capricorn season, aka; the Sun in Capricorn. That’s not new. A good majority of the time, Mercury is also in Capricorn due to its close astronomical proximity to the Sun. As for Venus, she’s not always in Capricorn while the Sun is, but she’s never too far away.
This January we get a Capricorn trifecta of not only the Sun, but Mercury and Venus too.
Sun – until January 19 / 20
Venus – until January 17
Mercury – until January 20 / 21
But wait…there’s more!
Mars!
Planet of energy, drive and motivation – Mars, visits Capricorn until January 23. Mars has a two – year cycle with the Sun, so we get Mars in Capricorn just once every two years. What makes Mars special here is that it’s exalted or raised up in Capricorn. Planets in exaltation have a certain kind of superpower. It’s as though they are held in high esteem or respect and are highly capable of bringing their best. Mars is impulsive, assertive and forceful. Place Mars in Capricorn and you get a slower, strategic and a tempered version of Mars.
Combine the short term motivation of Mars with the longer – term strategy of Capricorn and you get a winning formula for lasting success. When it comes to the whole New Year / New Me idea, many people overestimate what they can achieve in a few months but underestimate what can be accomplished over a couple of years.
CAZIMI, CAZIMI, CAZIMI
The ancient term, Cazimi translates to being at the heart of the Sun. This is a special place for a planet to be in. Cazimi happens when a planet is within 1 degree of the Sun. Some astrologers from the Medieval period narrowed this window to be within 17 arc minutes of the Sun, but I think within a degree is fine.
When Queen Elizabeth II was alive, it was a special privilege to have an audience with the Sovereign. To be in a private meeting with the Queen meant you got not only her ear, but her advice and wisdom too. This is what it’s like when planets make their annual meeting with the Sun, with the exception of Mercury who meets the Sun six times per year and Mars, just once every two years, on average.
In January, we get three Cazimi’s, a rare occurrence in a calendar month.
Venus – January 6 / 7 at 16 Capricorn
Mars – January 9 at 19 Capricorn
Mercury – January 21/ 22 at 1 Aquarius
Think of a Cazimi as a bit like a “new moon” for a planet. It’s renewed, recharged and ready for a new cycle.
HOW DOES THIS HELP YOU?
The overall forecast for 2026 is about action, movement and momentum as each of us figure out what the new defining criteria of this era we’re moving into looks like. 2026 demands you DO something with all that you have learned, all the wisdom you’ve gleaned and all that you’ve experienced especially over the past decade or so. What’s the point of the navel gazing process if you don’t somehow share that light, wisdom and insight to others?
January – at least the first few weeks are the most grounded and practical astrology on offer this year. It would be wise to utilise this energy, set your goals and implement a structure, a rhythm and routine that moves you in the right direction. Miss this opportunity and you’ll be operating from the back foot rather than the front.
Personally, I work with the Aries equinox as that’s the astrological new year. However, considering the astrology of 2026 is so fast paced and given that January feels so slow and solid compared to the rest of the year, I chose to take advantage and start the year on the front foot. The Aries New Moon will be helpful to check on progress and adjust accordingly.
Historically, there is one area of my life that is usually pretty disciplined – food / macros and weight training. 2025 was a bit wobbly for the most part and I really wanted to get back on track. For me, if diet and training is working well, everything else seems to. When I’m at my best, I track everything I eat into an app and my programming in the gym is all mapped out. All I need to do is commit to the process and execute the plan which I’ve done for a countless number of years at this point.
So why was I not taking the same commit and execute approach to other areas of my life?
Back in December I mapped out some career goals I wanted to achieve in 2026. Earlier this week I picked up a goal planner from Officeworks and put pen to paper. My New Years’ Eve was a date with that planner, a candle, a glass of wine and a sheet mask – party animal, I know. It actually felt strangely good to feel the clarity, focus and direction I wanted. Saturn had been on my midheaven for the past two months which helped.
So even if you’re a bit like me and not much of a New Year Resolution type, I do suggest you try it this year. If nothing else than for the fact that if you can get your ducks reasonably lined up, you’ll be well positioned to face the year in the attacking position with clarity, direction and focus. If not, you may find yourself on the defense – confused, distracted and overstimulated while having to make up for lost ground.
As far as 2026 goes, you may not be completely certain of what’s in the pipeline, however January reminds me of a sign my high school biology teacher had plastered on her blackboard – prior preparation prevents poor performance!
Happy New Year!
