The vast wilderness of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska is among the most beautiful and unforgiving landscapes on Earth. Towering mountain ranges, endless forests, massive glaciers, and remote coastlines have challenged explorers, hunters, pilots, and adventurers for generations. While modern aviation has made travel through these regions more accessible, the wilderness has also claimed countless aircraft—some of which have never been found.
Over the decades, a number of disappearances have become legendary. Searchers have spent years combing mountainsides, forests, and glaciers, yet many of these aircraft remain missing. Not surprisingly, some of these mysteries have become intertwined with local folklore, including tales of the Alaska Triangle, unexplained phenomena, and even Bigfoot.
1. The 1950 C-54 Skymaster Disappearance
Perhaps the most famous missing aircraft in northwestern North America, a U.S. Air Force Douglas C-54 Skymaster vanished on January 26, 1950, while flying from Anchorage, Alaska, to Great Falls, Montana. The aircraft carried 44 people.
Despite one of the largest air searches ever conducted in Canada and Alaska, no confirmed wreckage has ever been discovered. More than seventy years later, the fate of the aircraft remains unknown.
2. The Hale Boggs Disappearance (1972)
On October 16, 1972, a twin-engine Cessna carrying U.S. House Majority Leader Hale Boggs disappeared during a flight from Anchorage to Juneau.
An extensive search involving military aircraft, helicopters, ships, and thousands of personnel failed to locate any trace of the aircraft. The disappearance remains one of Alaska’s greatest unsolved aviation mysteries.
3. Pan Alaska Airways Flight N1812H (1972)
The same year, a Pan Alaska Airways Cessna 310 vanished while flying through the rugged Alaska wilderness. Despite extensive search efforts, neither the aircraft nor its occupants were ever found.
The case is frequently cited by aviation historians as one of Alaska’s most enduring missing aircraft mysteries.
4. The Ian Mackintosh Disappearance (1979)
British novelist and television writer Ian Mackintosh disappeared while flying between Alaska communities in 1979.
Despite multiple searches, no wreckage or remains have ever been located. His disappearance continues to intrigue both aviation enthusiasts and mystery researchers.

The Alaska Range has swallowed numerous aircraft over the decades. Hunters, prospectors, bush pilots, and private aviators have vanished among its glaciers, peaks, and valleys.

9. Unrecovered Military Aircraft in the Yukon
Military aircraft operating across Alaska, Yukon Territory, and northern British Columbia during World War II and the Cold War occasionally disappeared during training or transport missions.
While some have eventually been discovered, others remain missing somewhere within the vast northern wilderness.
10. The Missing Aircraft of Washington’s Cascades and Olympics
The Cascade and Olympic Mountains of Washington State have concealed numerous aircraft over the years. While some wreckage has been found decades after the fact, other disappearances remain unresolved.
These remote forests also happen to be among the most active regions for Bigfoot sightings, causing some missing-aircraft stories to become woven into local Sasquatch lore.
When Aviation Mysteries Meet Bigfoot Lore
It is important to note that there is no evidence linking Bigfoot or any other unexplained phenomenon to these aircraft disappearances. The realities of severe weather, rugged terrain, navigation challenges, and vast uninhabited wilderness provide more than enough explanation for why aircraft can vanish.
Nevertheless, many of the same regions associated with missing aircraft—the Olympic Peninsula, the Cascade Mountains, British Columbia’s wilderness, the Yukon, and Alaska’s backcountry—are also areas with long histories of Sasquatch reports.
Perhaps the true mystery is not why aircraft occasionally disappear, but how much unexplored wilderness still exists in North America. In a world increasingly mapped by satellites and technology, these lost aircraft serve as reminders that some places remain remote enough to keep their secrets for generations.
Whether viewed through the lens of aviation history, wilderness exploration, or regional folklore, these ten cases remain among the most fascinating unsolved mysteries of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
