Pollinator Ambassadors, a European charity co-founded by Zoology PhD student Nynke Blömer (Agroecology Group), has recently won grants for two new projects on youth engagement on the topic of pollinators.
Together with Biodiversity Action Europe, Pollinator Ambassadors secured funding worth 67,300 euros for the project “Buzzing Futures: Youth Advocacy and Communication for Pollinators” from the new European Fund for Youth Action on Pollinators managed by IUCN-Save Our Species.
The project focusses on youth engagement and empowerment using systems thinking and artistic tools and will take place in Austria and France in 2026-2027.
Nynke said, ‘We are very excited and honoured to participate in this fund, which is the first EU grant of its kind, geared specifically to youth-led and youth-focussed projects. It is part of the EU Pollinators Initiative: A New Deal for Pollinators, where in the lead-up our work was recognised in EU Parliament.’
Pollinator Ambassadors has also won an Erasmus+ grant worth 29,700 euros for their project “BEEodiversity”. This is a new partnership with youth organisations from Georgia, Türkiye, Lithuania, Greece, and Romania. This will be an Erasmus+ Youth Exchange that will place in Georgia in 2026. It will focus on building connections between young people, practicing language skills, and using community science tools to learn about pollinators.
About Pollinator Ambassadors
Pollinator Ambassadors focuses on biodiversity regeneration and artistic engagement with nature. Their work empowers young people to engage in activities for nature, with a strong focus on wild pollinators.
They often use zines, small magazines, to communicate pollinator decline, for example on how it makes us feel, where we find hope for the future, or how they inspire us.
Zines are usually independently published, low cost, and easy to distribute. They emerged about 100 years ago and gained popularity in the Riot Grrrl scene in the 90s, when girls and women came together to tackle the lack of women’s representation in the punk music scene.
Pollinator Ambassadors’ previous project, FLOWER: Facilitating Learning and Women’s Empowerment in Pollinator Regeneration resulted in a collection of zines made by women aged 18-30 on the topic of pollinator decline and regeneration. The zines were exhibited in the Museum of Zoology for Women’s Day last year.
