Mars moves into Gemini on Sunday, August 2, and stays there until Friday, September 18. That is about seven weeks in an enemy’s sign, and Mars in an enemy’s sign is not comfortable. Gemini belongs to Mercury, and Mercury wants to talk. Mars wants to win. Put those two together and you get the argument that starts over nothing and goes on for an hour.
So if you feel the need to debate, go right to a Toastmaster’s meeting. Channel it. The transit impacts Virgo, Sagittarius and Capricorn the most through its aspects.
What Mars in Gemini does well is problem solving. It sharpens the mind. It supports literary interests, mechanical and scientific work, research, and military strategy, which we could use less of.
What is actually aspecting Mars
The transit is not heavily afflicted. There are a few things worth marking, and it is worth being precise about how strong each one really is.
Mars trine Rahu, August 11. Mars at Gemini 6 degrees 08 minutes, Rahu at Aquarius 6 degrees 08 minutes in Dhanishtha. Rahu amplifies. A trine from Rahu gives the Mars energy somewhere to go, and if you have been sitting on a project that needs force behind it, that is your window.
Mars square Neptune, August 17. Mars at Gemini 9 degrees 46 minutes, right as it enters Ardra. Neptune fogs things. Mars wants a target and Neptune takes the target away. Watch for acting on bad information here, and be careful about anything that requires you to trust a stranger’s numbers.
Saturn to Mars, September 1. Mars at Gemini 19 degrees 26 minutes, Saturn at Pisces 19 degrees 26 minutes in Revati. Worth noting, but read it correctly: this is not a symmetrical hit. Counting from Pisces, Gemini is the fourth, so Saturn throws a 75 percent aspect onto Mars. Counting from Gemini, Pisces is the tenth, so Mars gives back only 25 percent. Saturn is doing the pressing here, not Mars. Saturn creates stress and problems and health issues. A good word for Saturn is stress. Mars wants to move and Saturn says not yet, and by the end of Ardra that is the flavor of the week.
Mrigashira: the spiritual warrior
Mars enters Gemini already in Mrigashira, or Orion, and stays there until August 12.
The constellation of Orion is always a coexistence of opposites. The deer symbol brings out the timid, light and fragile wandering qualities of this constellation, which seem opposed to the warrior nature of Mars. But in this sense the greatest spiritual warrior heroes of the Ramayana and the Gita, Hanuman and Arjuna, embody the constellation’s deep quest for liberation and for getting to the truth of the matter. If your Sun, Moon or rising sign is in this constellation, it gives you a deep yearning for something greater in your life.
The deity of the constellation is Soma, connected to the Moon and to the vital subtle forces that manifest the physiological components of enlightenment.
For now, enjoy the quest for Truth and for something higher in this very pure constellation, and my favorite of all, Orion, the spiritual warrior.
Ardra: the storms of the soul
Mars transits into Ardra on August 12 and stays until September 2. Western astronomers connect Ardra with Betelgeuse in the constellation of Orion, and with Sirius, the Dogstar.
Ardra is one of the more difficult constellations in the zodiac. It creates the clarity and the emotional cleansing that come after the storms of the soul recede. Mars here can be rather destructive, but it can also reach into the turmoil with courage and wisdom and weather the storms of change, as long as it does not get caught up in ambition, manipulation and fear. If it fails, self destruction can reign.
The primary symbols for Ardra are a human head, representing thinking, and a teardrop, representing overcoming suffering. It is an excellent rising nakshatra because it reflects the brilliant mental abilities of Einstein. Rudra, the lord of the storms, will probably kick off storm season with a bang, so listen to the radio more if you live in tornado or hurricane country.
Ardra creates emotional storms of short duration when we get stuck in the past, and its purpose is to shake us out of our rigidity and change our life to create a better future. It has the Uranus quality. The storms wash away the dirt and leave us clearer and brighter and shinier, so they have a positive purpose. Ardra ultimately seeks to dismantle whatever level of Maya or illusion we are stuck in. It can scatter mental energies and create confusion, and the key will be finding the courage to tackle the challenges and come out the other end of the car wash, squeaky clean.
Note that Saturn’s 75 percent aspect to Mars lands on September 1, in the last days of Ardra. That is the storm at its loudest.
Punarvasu: the return of the light
Mars moves into Punarvasu on September 2 and carries it into Cancer on September 18.
This eases things. Punarvasu brings Jupiter energy in, and the name itself means the return of the light, or the return of the goods. After Ardra, that is exactly what it feels like. Whatever got washed out in August starts coming back in a better form.
Remedies
If you are ruled by Scorpio or Aries, the key to this transit is to tone down being feverish and acting too rashly. Cool things down. Cold showers, trips to the pool, coconut water, milk and rose petal jam all calm the fire element. Cut down on intense exercise and competition that might increase the fire energy and lead to confrontation and fighting. Go for a swim instead.
If you are running a Rahu/Mars or a Mars/Rahu period, this transit may impact you most. Scorpio rising, with the eighth house transit through Gemini, has to find the tools of transformation to get through the storms. The transit is easier for Aries rising, but it still has to dig deep and find its courage to move forward.
Is this transit landing on your chart?
As always, transits are very specific to charts and to the larger cycles that are running, so if you are in a storm it might be time for a reading. A Vedic Natal Chart Reading with Barry covers five focus areas and your own questions, in 75 minutes.
All thanks to all my Gurus, Jyotish Gurus, and guides that support me on the path to Self-realization.
Have a great month, and remember that storms make us stronger if we go within and meditate, and help us discover that we are the depth of the unbounded ocean, and no waves or storms can touch us.
Warmly,
Barry
