Book recommendation of the week: The Shampoo Effect, by Jenny Jackson. The daughter of a famous writer, struggling to establish her own career, moves to a seaside town and meets a tight-knit group of friends, but an unexpected pregnancy disrupts everything. The author has said she wanted to do a modern take on John Updike’s Couples (scandalous at at the time for unveiling real-life suburban secrets from the author’s small town). (Amazon, Bookshop)
