
In 1954, three men climbing Cerro El Plomo in the Chilean Andes found the naturally mummified body of an Inca boy more than 5,400 metres above sea level. He was only eight or nine, dressed in ceremonial clothing and curled tightly with his knees drawn to his chest.
For decades, researchers believed the freezing mountain air had killed him. A new forensic study points to something much darker.
CT scans revealed a fracture on the left side of the boy’s forehead, while biomechanical modelling showed that a blunt, star-shaped weapon could have produced a similar injury. The researchers conclude that the boy, commonly known as the Niño del Cerro El Plomo, probably died from cranial trauma during a Capacocha sacrifice, a sacrificial rite performed the Inca.
But it gets even worse.
The same study revisited two individuals discovered on Cerro Esmeralda in northern Chile in 1976. One was about nine years old and the other about 18. Researchers had long attributed their deaths to strangulation, but the new examination found little to support that hypothesis. Instead, the three of them together suggest that Capacocha was more than a final ceremony on a mountaintop. It was a long ritual process involving travel, changes in diet and the participation of communities across the Inca Empire.
Sacrificed to the gods
The El Plomo boy and the Cerro Esmeralda individuals came from different places and probably died decades apart. Radiocarbon dating placed the Cerro Esmeralda deaths at around 1450 and that of the El Plomo boy at roughly 1480.
Yet their final months seem to have a similar pattern.
“Capacocha was not limited to the final act of offering at the mountain,” Verónica Silva-Pinto, the study’s first author, told Live Science. “It was an extended ritual process that began months earlier and involved mobility, dietary changes, the participation of different communities, and the creation of sacred landscapes.”
Capacocha ranked among the most important state ceremonies of the Tawantinsuyu, the Quechua name for the Inca Empire. Selected children and young people travelled to sacred places, including high mountains, where they were offered in rituals that combined religion, imperial authority and territorial integration.
The Inca may have not seen these children as victims. In their belief, the children entered the sacred world of the apus (mountain beings) and became intermediaries between communities, gods, and the imperial state.
But in the human realm, the children went through a horrid ordeal.

Their hair recorded their final months
Hair grows in stages, incorporating chemical signatures from the food and water a person consumes. Researchers can therefore analyse stable isotopes along individual strands to track broad changes in diet and environment over time.
The team’s results suggest that all three individuals moved between ecologically distinct regions before their deaths. The researchers estimated that the El Plomo boy covered between 2,600 and 2,800 kilometres during his final nine months, possibly travelling through or from the imperial centre around Cusco. They estimated that the Cerro Esmeralda individuals travelled between 900 and 1,200 kilometres over roughly three months.
Their diets changed, too. Maize, a crop strongly tied to Inca state rituals, appears to have played a growing role. The study also points to shared meals along the journey, suggesting that local communities helped host the pilgrims as they passed.
“[Isotopic analyses] provide exceptionally detailed information about people’s lives in the past,” Domingo C. Salazar-García of the University of Valencia said in a statement. “Particularly regarding diet, mobility, and changes that occurred during the final months of life.”
But the most striking discovery came from the El Plomo boy’s head.
A hidden injury in the skull

CT imaging showed a shallow injury on the skin over the left frontal region. Beneath it, the researchers identified a fracture and separation along the skull’s sutures. Their simulations found that a blow from a star-shaped mace was compatible with the pattern. However, it’s hard to say with certainty whether that’s exactly what was used.
The team found no signs of cold damage in his extremities, which makes the old hypothermia explanation unlikely. Researchers found food in his stomach and a dilated esophagus, signs that he ate shortly before death and may have vomited as he died.
The girls’ case remains less certain. Their neck marks, once read as signs of strangulation, now appear more consistent with pressure from clothing after death. Their hyoid bones, often damaged in strangulation, showed no fracture or displacement. Autopsies and rough handling after discovery disturbed the girls’ bodies, so researchers could not determine how they died.
Outside experts urged caution. Dagmara Socha, a bioarchaeologist at the University of Warsaw, told Live Science that the study is “interesting and potentially valuable,” but warned that “some of the interpretations go beyond what can be reliably concluded from the available evidence.”
Still, the study shows how older museum collections can yield new evidence when examined with modern tools. We can’t undo the tragedy of these children; yet perhaps, as scientists gather more evidence, we can at least better understand their stories.
