I’ve been sitting on this for a while until the situation resolved in my favor, but it was so infuriating that I feel the need to get it out somewhere people won’t identify me.
I got laid off about a year ago, which wasn’t surprising because the industry was going down the toilet. Due to some serious process issues in the finance department, I’d been managing the subscription for an online service used by the department I headed and several others, that wasn’t entirely mission critical but made a very large efficiency difference. I was paying for the subscription with my personal card and getting it reimbursed as a business expense.
When I was laid off, the finance department was supposed to take over managing that subscription. Surprise! They did not! They failed to manage it so badly, in fact, that they kept my personal card details attached to it and I only found out six months later when a close to four digit expense appeared on my account.
I went after them, and the finance manager had the cheek to insist I must have opened a personal subscription (I hadn’t). It took weeks of back and forth, me issuing them an invoice, the bank nearly getting involved for card fraud, a veiled threat to launch police and legal action, and I was quite prepared to publicly drag them all over social media.
Senior management whom I’d warned about the department’s issues eventually got involved and I got my money back, and more importantly, got my card details off the company subscription. But every single bit of goodwill I had for that company was burned negative in the process.
I don’t know that there’s much to learn from that mess, besides perhaps to never pick up the slack for the finance department again. Just needed to get it off my chest.
