EYE ON ASTROLOGY: EXALTED JUPITER IN CANCER UNTIL OCT. 31ST
When I meet people, they often want to tell me about their charts and proclaim, “I have an exalted Jupiter” or “I have an exalted Venus.” Often it is very positive, but there are so many qualifying factors and a little knowledge is always dangerous. People are too quick to judge something as good or bad, and nature gives us a thousand shades of gray and rarely do we get blacks and whites. Right now we have an exalted planet in the sky to learn from. Jupiter has been exalted in Cancer since June 1st and leaves for Leo on Saturday, Oct. 31st, at 12:18 AM Central, so we have a few more weeks to watch an exalted planet at work before it moves on.
Why does Jupiter exalt in Cancer? Because morals and wisdom are boring and useless without genuine emotional content. Cancer is the 4th sign of the zodiac and it shows the start of education and knowledge, and here the wisdom of Jupiter flows through compassion and the desire to protect and nourish life. Jupiter in Cancer creates strong education, wealth, a beneficial family life, strong intuition, great coaches and teachers and counselors, humanitarians and people who act for the public good. That is the promise.
So why do exalted planets sometimes not deliver their promises? Exalted planets get misunderstood. I find exalted planets can have too much energy and can be over-balanced. I often find that very religious people have Jupiter in Cancer, and their beliefs are so heartfelt and devoted that they may not let others in. What most people forget to analyze is the dispositor, or the lord of the sign the exalted planet sits in. For Jupiter in Cancer that is the Moon, and the Moon has to be well placed for the full benefit, so the impact is lessened if the Moon sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from Cancer. Then you look at the nakshatra and where its lord is placed, and at the Navamsha or D-9 chart, because an exalted planet is spoiled if it is debilitated in the D-9 or falls in the 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th house there. Vedic astrology is like reading strands of DNA. You do not want to over-generalize.
There are two more refinements that surprise people. You do not want exalted planets to be malefics, because it makes them more powerful to cause harm, particularly if they are also functional malefics for the chart, so an exalted Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu is not always something to brag about. And an exalted planet that is retrograde will bring outer success but create inner debility. I have an exalted, retrograde Saturn that gives me technical abilities, deep spirituality and patience, but it also creates excessive fear about the simplest things like driving. Often a retrograde exalted planet will take away the success it has given at some point and lead to renouncing outer achievements.
The transit shows the same shades of gray. Jupiter reaches the peak of its exaltation at 5 degrees of Cancer, and now it is at the far end of the sign in the constellation of Ashlesha (Cancer 16.40-30), the coiled serpent, where the toxins of the past accumulate in a big knot. From Saturday, Oct. 10th, until it leaves Cancer on Oct. 31st, Jupiter is in the Gandanta, or karmic knot, the last three degrees between a water sign and a fire sign (Cancer 27-Leo 3), and that can bring up deep emotional issues and karmic destinies that need to be transformed. So even an exalted teacher has to work through a knot on the way out. Jupiter’s good judgment can get lost here and it can be a bit naive, so when you make important decisions, rely on facts, figures and Saturn’s hard data.
Mars is debilitated in Cancer at the same time until Nov. 12th, which puts the two of them in the same sign in completely opposite conditions. The teacher is at his strongest and the warrior is at his weakest, in the same room. Mars in Cancer is a bit like a declawed cat, irritated but not able to do much harm, and exalted Jupiter sitting in the same sign is the grace in the picture. Whatever Jupiter has been growing for you in Cancer since last October, this is the stretch where you protect it quietly rather than defend it loudly.
Jupiter expands both the favorable and unfavorable qualities of the house it transits. Cancer rising has exalted Jupiter on the ascendant and may be prone to weight gain as Jupiter expands the physical body. Scorpio and Pisces rising, with Jupiter in the 9th and 5th houses, and anyone with the Moon in a water sign, may find this a time of profound inner growth, reconnection with one’s lineage and deep connections with spiritual teachers. Capricorn rising has Jupiter in the 7th house, so partnerships can flourish, but do not delay transactions or break commitments with partners and keep your expectations realistic. Gemini rising has Jupiter in the 2nd house of money, so financial opportunities increase, but avoid overspending on luxury items and watch that extra piece of cheesecake. Leo rising has had Jupiter in the 12th house and needs to watch expenditures, and from Oct. 31st Leo rising gets Jupiter on the ascendant, where it meets Ketu on Nov. 11th and Mars on Nov. 16th.
Honor the Moon in these last weeks, since the Moon owns Cancer and provides the foundation for Jupiter’s exaltation. Feed others, take care of family and spend some time near water. Donate on Thursdays, especially food or yellow clothes or donations to teachers and spiritual guides, and do your meditation and devotional singing.
Jupiter goes retrograde in Leo on Saturday, Dec. 12th, and slips back into Cancer on Jan. 24th for one more visit, so the story of exalted Jupiter is not quite finished. For now, finish what Jupiter started for you in Cancer, call the teacher who helped you and do not mistake a strong planet for an easy one.
