On the plane home from Australia on Tuesday, I started watching ‘A Star is Born.’ I didn’t get far – there was an issue with the entertainment system, and it had to be rebooted – but I did get far enough to see the first song that Bradley Cooper’s character sings, Maybe It’s Time.
I remember loving this song when the movie came out in October 2018 (!). The lyrics touched me as much now as they did when I first saw the film, and again, they made me think of the current astrology.
An astrological link from late 2018 to now is Venus retrograde in Scorpio.
As I heard the lyrics to Maybe It’s Time this week, I thought of the deep, dark cavern Venus is moving through as she comes to the end of her current solar phase cycle. The words of the song seemed to speak to the ‘dying of the old’ that this part of Venus’ cycle can represent.
Moving through the Tunnel: Times of Transition
This reminded me that now is a time to let old dreams die, and old longings go. That it’s time to release a past vision you had for yourself. To let go of the expectation or hope that you’d feel a certain way, look a certain way, that you’d cultivate a particular kind of vibe. Those longings come from the old you and now it’s time to lay them to rest.
Writing this today I watch the leaves falling from the trees. As I wander in the yard, I see the garden starting to decay. Instead of lush green the garden is a mix of mottled yellow, browns and some funky kinds of leaf mold, as the chill sets in and leaves contract and wither.
Everywhere seems full of signs of endings, emptying out, of reaching the end of a period of heightened activity. I see clues in nature that after a season of productive output a period of retreat, reflection and rest will be necessary.
Maybe It’s Time is a haunting, raw song. It’s evocative and profound. Cooper’s scratchy sound and the emotion in his voice captures a kind of vulnerability. It’s the kind of song you could imagine sung in sorrow, or as a lament to the dead. There’s grief but also wisdom.
If you haven’t heard it – or haven’t heard it for a while – you can listen here.
Seasons of Transformation and Phases of Release
“Maybe it’s time to let the old ways die” reminds me that holding on is fruitless, that change is inevitable. That growth and expansion naturally led to decline and decay.
And I’m reminded that this special cycle of Venus – where she packs up the past as she heads off on a pilgrimage to the temple of the Sun, for rites of purification, release and renewal – is a divine omen that can inspire these same kinds of shifts around endings and change for each of us.
Given that Venus is moving through this endings part of her cycle while in Scorpio, a sign of the process of death, endings and decay, mixes two separate influences – a planetary phase and a sign – that together combine to intensify these themes.
- What do you need to pack up and release?
- What pilgrimage or trip to the temple do you need to organize for yourself? (This can be as simple as extra quiet time alone for reflection and contemplation, like changing or shifting your usual schedule and routines – it doesn’t have to be an actual trip.)
- What rituals of release might you be ready to move through?
The song continues to offer reminders of wisdom:
“I’m glad I can’t go back to where I came from…
Moving forward is the way, or to put it another way, the only way out is through.
If you’re in a dark space, a tiny step forward helps. If you’re in ok space but struggling to make sense of it all, Venus’ current phase might invite you to let go rather than persist or hold on. Note what you can’t control or force and instead refocus on something within your sphere of influence.
Vanishing Venus and Time Away
By Tuesday, October 13 Venus will have vanished from the night sky. Venus will then remain hidden until November 1, when she will re-merge in the morning before the Sun’s rise.
Can you take a step back from Oct 13 – Nov 1?
- What can you remove yourself from during this time?
- How might you willingly embrace a more hidden or secluded position?
- How might you make space to let go of what’s stuck and stagnant so that it can compost and decay?
- In what ways can you actively work with releasing, clearing, and letting go during this period?
Hint: I suggest a good clear out of your clothes, plus beauty, grooming products and art or other objects of decoration (from jewelry to home décor) and more in my Venus Retrograde in Scorpio and Libra online seminar.
Purge, Purify and Cleanse
This window of time – from mid-October until early November – is ideal for solitude, for spiritual and physical cleansing practices of all kinds, and for creating space for emptiness and just being. You might opt for a deep clean of your home, office, or devices.
Think purge and purify to make space and create room for new perspectives.
These kinds of phase changes were the original astrological symbols of transformation, and so this season provides a visual reminder that it’s possible to change form, and position, to move from one kind of expression of self to another.
If even Venus wants to shed her skin, to let old longings and desires go, to compost the cravings of the past, to pause to release and recent before new desires emerge, what old ways are you ready to release?
