International shipping updates, customs challenges, and how to safely order living PyroDinos directly from PyroFarms.
At PyroFarms, one of our greatest pleasures is sharing the amazing world of bioluminescence with customers around the globe. From classrooms and research laboratories to homes and aquariums, our living PyroDinos® have traveled to countless destinations, bringing a little piece of the glowing ocean with them.
But shipping living microorganisms internationally isn’t always easy.
Unlike conventional products, PyroDinos are living marine plankton that require careful handling, reasonable temperatures, and timely delivery. International customs regulations, unexpected carrier delays, and extreme weather can all present challenges.
We frequently receive inquiries from customers whose countries are not listed among the shipping destinations on our website. The good news is that we may still be able to arrange a custom international shipment.
Here’s what you should know before ordering.
Your Country Isn’t Listed? Contact Us Directly!
If your country doesn’t appear in the shipping options at checkout on PyroFarms.com, it doesn’t necessarily mean we cannot ship to you.
Some destinations are temporarily unavailable due to customs complications, shipping restrictions, unreliable transit times, or seasonal weather conditions.
In many cases, we’re happy to explore alternative shipping arrangements.
To request a custom international shipping quote, please provide:
-
Your complete shipping address, including postal code and country.
-
The PyroFarms products and quantities you would like to purchase.
-
A valid telephone number, including your international country code.
Please submit your request through our Contact PyroFarms page or email support@pyrofarms.com.
We’ll review available shipping services, estimated delivery times, and any known customs restrictions before providing a quote.
Not every destination is feasible, but we’re always happy to investigate the possibilities.
The Frustrating Reality of European Customs
Over the years, PyroFarms has successfully shipped living PyroDinos to numerous European countries.
Unfortunately, international customs regulations and their enforcement can be unpredictable, particularly when shipping live marine microorganisms.
We’ve experienced situations where shipments entered a country repeatedly without any problems, only to have a subsequent shipment unexpectedly detained, delayed, or rejected by customs.
Italy, Austria, and Spain have presented particularly frustrating challenges.
In some cases, we’ve shipped PyroDinos successfully to these countries for years, only to encounter unexpected requests for additional documentation, import certificates, or other approvals that were not previously required of our shipments.
These changes can happen with little or no advance notice to us.
For customers, this can mean frustrating delays, unexpected costs, or the disappointment of never receiving their living PyroDinos.
For PyroFarms, it means watching carefully grown cultures sit in customs facilities while we attempt to resolve issues that are often beyond our control.
Fortunately, our experience has been more consistent in other European destinations.
Countries such as France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland, along with the United Kingdom, have generally provided more predictable customs handling for our shipments.
However, past success does not guarantee that future shipments will clear customs without additional inspections or documentation.
We continue to evaluate international shipping destinations based on our experience and changes in local import requirements.
Shipping to Australia: Import Permits Required
We receive frequent inquiries from Australian customers interested in growing their own PyroDinos.
Shipping living PyroDinos to Australia may be possible, but Australia’s strict biosecurity regulations require appropriate import authorization.
Australian customers interested in importing PyroDinos must first determine and satisfy the applicable import requirements, including obtaining an import permit when required.
We cannot ship living PyroDinos to Australia without confirmation that the necessary import approvals are in place.
For more information, visit the Australian Government’s Biosecurity Import Conditions System (BICON).
Once the appropriate approvals have been obtained, please contact PyroFarms to discuss available shipping options.
Beware of Unauthorized Third-Party Sellers
We’ve noticed that some international online marketplaces and third-party sellers advertise PyroFarms products in countries where we do not currently offer direct shipping.
One example is Ubuy, which may display PyroFarms products for sale in international markets.
We strongly discourage customers from purchasing living PyroDinos through unauthorized third-party sellers or international reshipping services.
A product appearing for sale on a third-party website does not mean that PyroFarms has authorized that seller or approved shipping to that country.
The safest way to purchase living PyroDinos is directly through PyroFarms or an authorized seller.
If you’re unsure whether a seller is authorized, please contact us before purchasing.
How Long Can PyroDinos Survive in Shipping?
PyroDinos are surprisingly resilient microorganisms.
We’ve seen living cultures survive more than 10 days inside a shipping box, demonstrating just how hardy these remarkable marine plankton can be.
However, surviving an extended shipment and arriving in optimal condition are two very different things.
For international shipments, we recommend transit times of fewer than 7 days, with shorter delivery times strongly preferred.
As a general rule, we avoid shipping services that quote delivery times of 7 days or longer.
Extended transit increases the risk of temperature exposure, prolonged darkness, shipping damage, and customs delays.
Because PyroDinos are photosynthetic organisms, they also need to return to a regular daily light cycle as soon as practical after arrival.
The sooner they’re unpacked and placed in an appropriate environment, the better their chances of recovering from their journey and producing their beautiful blue bioluminescence.
Temperature Matters: When NOT to Order
The time of year can be just as important as the shipping destination.
Extreme temperatures can harm living PyroDinos, especially when packages are exposed to hot delivery vehicles, freezing conditions, or outdoor storage areas.
We recommend avoiding international orders when your region is experiencing temperatures outside the following range:
35°F–92°F (approximately 2°C–33°C).
This applies to both cold winter conditions and intense summer heat.
Even when outdoor temperatures are within this range, shipping vehicles and storage facilities may become considerably hotter or colder than the surrounding environment.
If your region is experiencing a heatwave or cold spell, we strongly recommend postponing your order until more moderate temperatures return.
A little patience can make a tremendous difference in the success of your shipment.
Why We Prefer DHL for International Shipments
Most of our international PyroDino shipments travel using DHL Express.
We’ve found DHL to be a useful international shipping partner because of its global delivery network, tracking capabilities, and express shipping services.
That said, no shipping carrier can guarantee that a package will avoid customs inspections or unexpected delays.
For international deliveries, we strongly recommend using a complete physical street address rather than a PO Box.
A physical address generally provides more reliable delivery options and reduces the possibility of carrier-related complications.
Your Phone Number Is Extremely Important
Please always provide a valid telephone number when placing an international order.
Your phone number is not just another checkout detail.
International carriers frequently use the recipient’s telephone number to resolve customs questions, collect duties or taxes, confirm addresses, or coordinate delivery.
A missing or incorrect telephone number can result in unnecessary delays, sometimes lasting several days.
For living PyroDinos, those additional days can make a significant difference.
Please include your full international phone number, including the country code, and remain available to respond to carrier communications while your shipment is in transit.
We also recommend monitoring your tracking information closely and contacting the carrier immediately if additional information or action is requested.
Important: Custom International Shipments Are at the Customer’s Risk
We want our international customers to experience the beauty of living bioluminescence and will do our best to accommodate special shipping requests. While our PyroFarms Guarantee applies to countries currently listed on our website, custom international shipments carry additional risks and are not covered by our guarantee. We cannot offer refunds or replacements for customs holds, shipping delays, or other issues beyond our control.
We will make reasonable efforts to select an appropriate shipping service and prepare the shipment for international travel, but we cannot control customs decisions or carrier operations once the package leaves our facility.
Customers are responsible for ensuring that the products may be legally imported into their destination country.
We believe in being transparent about these risks before accepting an order rather than making promises we cannot guarantee.
These special-request conditions will be communicated before a customer approves and pays for a custom shipment. They do not affect applicable statutory consumer rights.
Bringing the Glow to More of the World
At PyroFarms, our mission has always been simple: Grow the Glow.
We love sharing the extraordinary beauty of bioluminescence with people around the world, and nothing makes us happier than hearing from international customers experiencing their first glowing PyroDinos.
We also recognize how disappointing international shipping complications can be, especially when customers have spent considerable time and money preparing for their living cultures to arrive.
We share that frustration.
While customs regulations, international logistics, and seasonal temperatures will always present challenges, we’ll continue looking for responsible ways to make PyroDinos available to more countries.
Don’t see your country at checkout? We’d love to hear from you.
Visit our Contact Page and send us your complete shipping address, desired products, and telephone number.
We’ll explore your shipping options and let you know what may be possible.
Keep glowing, wherever you are in the world.
